Mike Rayworth a 5th kyu Green belt, who was a last minute choice, lost to Hirose (5th Dan) and drew with Shisno (3rd Dan) before putting up a tremendous performance against (3rd Dan) Utagawi.
At the end of 2 minutes the fight had to go into a minute overtime, but even then the referee, judges and overseer could not make a decision, and the contest was extended for another 3 minutes before Utagawi finally won by half a point. Japan won the match.
